Recent data from a meta-analysis of observational studies of esomeprazole and other drugs to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease and other conditions related to inflammation suggests that long-term use of esomeprazole and other proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) can increase the risk of death in patients with this condition.
In the United States, esomeprazole (Nexium 24HR, Nexium 24HR Proton Pump Inhibitor) is approved for the treatment of H1 and H2 reflux disease, and for the treatment of reflux disease caused by the inflammation of the esophagus. Esomeprazole was first approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1967.
However, esomeprazole can also be used to treat acid reflux disease, a condition in which stomach acid builds up in the esophagus. This acid can be responsible for causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, dyspepsia, and acid reflux.
